After going 1-1 in opening baseball action, The Dalles’ 13U Babe Ruth All Stars are put in a situation where it needs to win games today in order to keep playing in the state championship rounds Thursday in Baker City.
Tuesday, TD started on the right foot with a 10-6 win over Union County.
In this game, The Dalles scored Brody Woods went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and the duo of Kolbe Bales and Bailey Keever notched two hits each.
Bales added two RBIs and two runs scored for TD, which slugged out 10 hits and swiped eight bases.
The Dalles had an early bead on play with three runs in the first inning.
Daniel Peters led off with a walk and stole second base. Jacob Justesen then hit an RBI single.
One out later, Tylan Webster singled in Justesen and Bales followed with another RBI single to run the count up to 3-0.
TD added four more runs in the third on RBIs by Bales, Bradley Moe, Will Justesen and Woods.
In the fourth inning, The Dalles scratched across two runs and capped their scoring with a run in the sixth.
Bales lasted four innings and allowed two runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Woods finished the final three frames in relief, allowing one run on three hits with a strikeout and two walks.
“Outstanding effort by Brody Woods at plate and in relief,” said head coach Jeff Justesen. “[It was a] great job by team on bases. We were running the bases well, not only stealing bases, but taking extra bases on hits and scoring on aggressive base running.”
In the second game, Keever tossed a complete-game with three strikeouts, but several errors on the field led to four unearned runs in The Dalles’ 4-1 loss to the Oregon Swat.
Two of TD’s four hits came in the top of the first inning, as Jacob Justesen doubled and Webster drove him in with a run-scoring single to give TD a 1-0 lead, but after that they could not get anything else going.
Jacob Justesen had a 2 for 3 split with a run scored, and both Keever and Webster tacked on a hit apiece.
“Tough day at the plate,” coach Justesen said. “(We) never really got anything going. Bailey battled on the mound, but too many unearned runs. Not a lot of errors, just some plays we should have made.”
TD played earlier today against Snake River Valley and Moundtime, out of Tualatin.
Two wins and they should be in Thursday’s playoffs. One win and they will need help.
