The Yakama Nation, with Northwest tribes, will host a press conference on the lown of Mosier Elementary School in Mosier today, June 9, at 10 a.m., according to a press release from Columbia River Keeper.
In addition to tribal leaders, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. of Waterkeeper Alliance, will join and speak to show support of tribal fishing rights.
June 9 marks the 161st anniversary of the signing of Yakama Nation’s treaty with the United States government in 1855.
“The oil train derailment is devastating to the community of Mosier and the people of the Columbia River,” said JoDe Goudy, chairman of the Yakama Nation. “We’ve said for years that any transportation of fossil fuels in our region is a risk. It’s not about ‘if’ but ‘when’ an accident like this happens.”
“As we commemorate the signing of Yakama’s treaty with the United States government,” he added, “we demand the protection of our inherent rights guaranteed by the Treaty of 1855.”
The event will be attended by Pacific Northwest tribal leaders, many in regalia, including JoDe Goudy, Chairman of Yakama Nation, members of Yakama Nation Tribal Council and other Northwest tribes.
