Campgrounds evacuated over Memorial weekend

The campground was evacuated just before 8 p.m., according to the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office radio log. The fire had burned through several of the camp sites.

Residents of homes at South Junction were advised of the fire but were not in immediate danger, according to the sheriff’s logs. Burlington Northern also stopped its train traffic just after 8:30 p.m. until it was given the all-clear. The fire was burning about 200 feet from the tracks and eventually was not headed toward the tracks anymore.

When Bureau of Land Management personnel took over management of the fire later Sunday, they estimated it had reached 300 acres in size.

Late Sunday, campers at five campgrounds in the area were warned to put out their camp fires.
