THE GORGE – Trout Lake senior Jayden Kuskey, a few weeks from heading to the East Coast for a stint in the Coast Guard, capped his high school track and field career with an OSAA Class 1A state championship May 28 in the shot put.
Kuskey won the shot put at 52 feet, 2.5 inches, and finished fourth in the discus at 145-3 to score 15 team points for the 16th-place Mustang boys at the two-day meet at historic Hayward Field.
Kuskey finished his high school throwing career as a three-time district champion in the shot put; he also won the district discus title this spring. He is the school recordholder in both events (54-6.5 and 156-10).
Lyle/Wishram was the top Gorge 1A team, placing in a tie for 14th with 16 points. The Cougars were led by senior Zekiel Marble, who placed third in the 300-meter hurdles in 40.57 seconds and fourth in the 110 hurdles in 15.91 (after a 15.69 time in the prelims).
Senior Jack Thiemann was fourth in the triple jump, bounding a lifetime best 41-7 on his sixth – and final -attempt. He also was ninth in the long jump.
The Horizon Christian boys were led by state meet placer Josh Carley, who finished fifth in the 3000 on May 28. He raced to an eight-second personal best of 9:24.47 (school record). Carley doubled back the next day to finish ninth in the 1500 meters (PR 4:20.15). Horizon also finished eighth in the 4x100 relay. John Tu, Charlie Haynie, Landon Whitaker and Judah Garrett set a school record in the process of 45.62.
Dufur was led at state by its 4x400 relay, which placed eighth in a season best 3:40.56. Zeb Stelzer, Noah Coleman, Ian Pechanec, and Chase Richards ran legs for the Rangers. Richards ran a stellar 52-second quarter on the anchor leg. Stelzer, a junior, raced to a lifetime best in the May 29 1500 meters of 4:19.90.
Glenwood senor Ciaran McCabe reset his own school record and ran a lifetime best in the 800 meters at Hayward of 2:06.88. South Wasco County senior Jason Hull capped his school record-setting hurdle career in the May 28 state meet preliminary round; Hull set the Redside record in the 110s (15.95 seconds) at the District 3-1A meet. Redside sophomore Gabe Ford threw a PR 17-4.25 in the para shot put at state.
