The Trout Lake girls track and field team dominated the 2024 District 3 track and field meet May 10-11 at South Wasco High School, winning with 154 points.
The deep Mustangs squad, under the direction of first-year Coach Sharla Rubesh, won over runner-up South Wasco by 68 points. Trout Lake placed (top eight finishers) in 12 of 15 individual events and won both relays.
The top-two finishers at district in individual events and relays qualified for the 2024 Class 1A state meet May 16-17 at Hayward Field in Eugene. There were four other wild card berths statewide and qualifying standards which afforded athletes another way to qualify for state — including some from Trout Lake.
Among the individual champions for Trout Lake were: Cora Sharp (100 meters, 200 meters, and long jump, personal record 17 feet, .75 inches/5.2 meters); Mayana Stock (1500 and 3000, personal record 11:38.35); Jade Mclean (pole vault, PR 9 feet, 10.5 inches/3.01 meters.
The Mustang district champion 4x100 relay included Sharp, Mclean, Nancy Painter, and Lupe Medina, which ran 52.12. The Trout Lake 4x400 relay (4:29.14) had legs from Medina, Mclean, Stock and Painter.
Other girls district champions from Gorge-area schools included: South Wasco’s Bailey Udey (triple jump); Hannah Adams of Horizon Christian (high jump and 100 hurdles, PR 16.14 seconds); Lena Thiemann from Klickitat (javelin); Sophie Hulke of Sherman (PR shot put of 35-8.75/10.89 meters and discus); Jayda Iverson of South Wasco (2:34.94 800).
Adams was the female high point scorer with 33 points — she won the high jump and 100 hurdles, was second in the pole vault and fourth in the 300 hurdles.
Condon won the boys meet, followed by runner-up South Wasco. The Redsides were led by district champion, senior Joey Holloway. He scored 24 points by winning the javelin, placing second in the discus and fourth in the shot put. He also finished eighth in the 100 meters.
Trout Lake boys were third and led by three-time champion, junior Sawyer Dean, who cleared 14 feet in the pole vault (4.27 meters), and senior Dylan Nortz, who was second in the 200 and high jump; and sophomore Jayden Kusky, who tossed a PR in the shot put at 48-1.5 (14.67 meters).
Lyle/Wishram tied for fourth place and had one champion, sophomore Jack Thiemann, who won the triple jump with a PR 38-3.75 mark (11.68 meters). Horizon Christian tied for sixth and was led by junior distance runner Caleb Caldwell, who won the 3000 and was second in the 1500. Â
