The Dalles High Riverhawks Class 4A girls basketball team has endured a tough nonleague schedule that should get it ready for its league season next month.
In six of the seven defeats in the non-league games, the Riverhawks (2-7) lost to OSAA top-10 ranked teams. Three of those opponents (Banks, Corbett, and La Grande) were state playoff squads last year. Two other teams — Seaside and Tillamook — are projected to be state playoff teams this year.
The only team not near the top in the rankings were the North Bend Bulldogs, who the Riverhawks played Dec. 19 after a six-hour road trip to Southern Oregon’s Coos County. The Riverhawks, guided by third-year Coach Darcey Hodges, played tough, particularly early in the game, but lost, 51-40.
“We’ve had kind of a tough time, but we’re playing some top-10 ranked teams right now and we’re a very young squad,” said Hodges. “Only two of our players (juniors Sydney Newby, Laci Hoylman), have played more than 20 varsity games each. We really haven’t been that far off from pulling out some wins though.”
The Riverhawks were led in scoring against North Bend by junior post Sydney Newby with 19 points. Newby recently exceeded 500 points in her varsity career during the Seaside Holiday Tournament Dec. 14-16.
The Riverhawks faced the Class 3A No. 1-ranked Corbett High Cardinals (8-0) for the second time in six days Dec. 21 and they lost 65-36 at Corbett High School. The Riverhawks also lost 65-41 to Corbett on Dec. 16 in the Seaside Tournament.
