Noah Noteboom photoThe Dalles High Riverhawks (6-4) snapped a two-game losing streak with a close 7-6 win over Eugene’s Marist (6-7) in a Class 4A nonleague baseball home game April 5.
Senior Luciano Alvarado (2-for-3, two RBI) hit a walk-off, go-ahead RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel the Riverhawks to the win over the No. 4 ranked Spartans.
The Riverhawks had a great start with a 4-0 first inning lead. Marist came back and trimmed the margin to 4-3 in the third inning. The Riverhawks responded by scoring one run in the fourth and one in the fifth for a 6-3 lead. The Spartans fought back and scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh, knotting it 6-6.
The Riverhawks, who outhit the Spartans 8-5, were led offensively by Nolan Donivan (2-for-3), Will Booth (1-for-2, two RBI) and Avery Schwartz (1-for-3, two RBI).
The pitching duo of starter Schwartz (three strikeouts, three walks) and reliever Donivan, combined on the mound to help lead the Riverhawks to the victory.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Marist won 10-4. The Spartans took a 4-1 first inning advantage and they extended their lead to 10-2 in the top of the sixth inning.
The Spartans outhit the Riverhawks 9-6. The Dalles was led offensively by Donivan (2-for-4, two RBI), Cody Agidius (1-for-4, RBI) and Schwartz (1-for-2, RBI).
Prior to the matchup with Marist, the No. 14-ranked Riverhawks played a nonleague road game versus the No. 10-ranked Pendleton High Buckaroos (5-7) April 3, and they lost 3-1 at Pendleton High School. The Riverhawks, who outhit the Buckaroos 7-5, were led offensively by Alvarado (1-for-3, RBI), Cody Agidius (2-for-3), Schwartz (1-for-3), Booth (1-for-4) and Finley Corbin (1-for-2).
