THE DALLES – The Dalles High School girls tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak with two dual match wins last week to improve to 4-3 this season.
The Riverhawks lost April 7, 5-2, to Madras, but bounced back with a shutout win on April 9 over Sisters, 8-0, and followed that with a 5-2 win over Stanfield.
In the sweep of Sisters, The Dalles earned singles wins from Liz Murillo, Rokiah Notbohn, Luz Rodriguez, and Azul Alba. In doubles, the team of Victoria Gonzalez and Leila Garcia set the tone with their win in the No. 1 slot. Valeria Villa and Sofia Rogers won at No. 2, not giving up a game; Amber Foley and Nancy Dias won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3; and Olivia Anderson and Naomi Urenda won at No. 4.
A day later, The Dalles won 5-2 over Stanfield. Notbohn and Rodriguez won in singles, and Gonzalez and Garcia won their third No. 1 doubles match of the week for Coach Debby Jones’ Riverhawks.
Meantime, the Riverhawk boys team improved to 5-2 on the season with three victories this past week. The Dalles’ top three singles players – Jonathan Rodriguez, Dante Kim, and Christian Santillan went a combined 6-3 in their matches. Santillan won all three of his tests at No. 3 singles, Kim won twice at No. 2, and Rodriguez once in the No. 1 spot.
One of Rodriguez’s losses was 6-2, 6-4 to 2025 state tourney doubles player, Isidro Olivera of Madras. His other loss – 6-1, 7-6 - came to Sisters’ senior Dominic Pulver, who was a state singles player a year ago.
The Dalles’ top three doubles teams also had a 6-3 combined record in the three matches: a 6-1 win over Stanfield; a 5-3 victory against Sisters; and a 6-2 defeat of Madras. The No. 2 doubles team of Gunderson Emmett and Julian Rodriguez won all three of its matches; Orlando Vargas and Eden Rodriguez, at No. 3 doubles, went 2-1; and the No. 1 team of Jesus Chavez and Zack Pothier won its match over Stanfield.
