THE DALLES — The three-time Tri-Valley Conference champion The Dalles High Riverhawks (8-0 TVC, 14-0 overall) continued their undefeated season in OSAA Class 4A girls soccer after winning their final regular season home game, 5-0, over the Molalla High Indians (4-4 TVC, 9-6 overall) on Oct. 28.
The two teams played an even first half; Molalla finished third in the TVC and also qualified for the state playoffs. Riverhawk sophomore midfielder Willow Ziegenhagen scored a goal with six seconds left in the first half to break the scoreless tie.
The Riverhawks then had a dominating second half performance. Senior midfielder Natalia Elias, junior midfielder Lilyana Gonzalez, freshman forward Clara Gardipee and junior forward Ariana Gonzalez each scored goals for The Dalles. It marked the 11th shutout of the season for the Riverhawks.
The No. 2-ranked Riverhawks, guided by 12th-year Coach Colby Tonn, qualified for 16-team state playoffs for a fourth consecutive year. The Riverhawks were seeking to get first-round home win Nov. 4 versus the No. 15-ranked Rainier/Clatskanie High Columbians (6-6-2).
“When you get to the playoffs, you have to take it one game at a time,” said Tonn. “We’ll be looking to play our game and go out and play hard in each contest. We’ve had some very good opponents during the regular season. We’ll also face some pretty tough opponents in the playoffs.”
Tuesday’s winner advances to the Nov. 8 quarterfinals (a home game for The Dalles) versus the winner of a first-round playoff game between the No. 9-ranked North Bend High Bulldogs (8-4-2) and the Klamath Union High Pelicans (8-4-1).
