THE DALLES — The Dalles Riverhawks softball team lost 4-3 to No. 3-seed Astoria in the May 27 first round of the OSAA Class 4A state playoffs.

The No. 13-seeded Riverhawks (13-12 overall) pulled ahead in the fifth inning thanks to an inside-the-park home run by freshman Bryce Newby, which brought in Karly Jara, who had entered as a pinch runner for Cadence Young (2-for-3, two singles). The Dalles took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning and held that lead until the final frame.
