Stevenson sweep propels CHS in softball
The Columbia High Bruins opened their WIAA Class 1A Trico League softball schedule with a 3-0 sweep over Gorge rival Stevenson last week.
The Bruins (3-0 league, 5-3 overall) won an April 9 home doubleheader 16-1 and 10-0, followed by a 10-7 victory April 12 over the Bulldogs (0-3 league, 2-5 overall) at Stevenson.
“The team is starting to gain a lot of confidence and the girls are all playing very well,” said Coach Jesse Bryan. “Josie Dickey and Danica Herman both pitched well against Stevenson. ... Lola Marti is healthy now and it’s nice to have her getting some time in the pitching circle.
“We intentionally scheduled tough preseason games against bigger schools this year. We struggled to make much happen in games against Centralia [13-1 loss March 26] and Camas [20-2 loss March 28]. We had an unusual amount of walks and our bats were quiet.”
The Bruins played two more nonleague games April 13 at Walla Walla Community College. They lost their first game 16-1 to the Class 2A Lynden Christian High Lyncs (6-4) and then bounced back and won 9-3 over the Meridian High Trojans (5-6).
The Bruins were scheduled to play a Trico League doubleheader Tuesday (April 16) at home versus the Castle Rock High Rockets (4-0 league, 6-2 overall). The Bruins play their next contest at 4 p.m. Friday at Castle Rock High School.
