THE GORGE — Six Gorge-area Class 1A high schools competed at the May 2 Redside Invitational track and field meet, hosted by South Wasco County on a hot, windy day in Maupin.
Trout Lake senior Jayden Kusky won the boys shot put and discus in personal best efforts, marks that put him among the top three in the OSAA 1A state rankings thus far. Kusky’ shot put best of 52 feet, 1 inch ranks him No. 2 in 1A and his discus throw of 148-5 is the No. 3 mark. Earlier in the week at a meet in Stevenson, Kusky had thrown a then-PR 51 feet in the shot, and 142-4 in the discus.
Dufur distance runner Zeb Stelzer and Horizon Christian’s Josh Carley went head-to-head in the windy boys 1500- and 800-meter runs, with Stelzer winning both races. The Ranger junior won the 1500 in a personal best 4 minutes, 26.21 seconds (to sophomore Carley’s 4:32.13), and the 800 in 2:11.763 (Carley 2:15.59). Stelzer’s teammate, Chase Richards, won the 400 and the high jump.
Lyle-Wishram’s Ezekiel Marble won three boys events: the 100; the 110 hurdles; and the 300 hurdles (in a personal best 41.46). Marble edged South Wasco senior Jason Hull in the hurdle races, while Hull capped the meet by anchoring the Redsides’ 4x400 relay to first place. Lyle’s Jack Thiemann won the triple jump at 39-8.5, and he was second in the long jump.
South Wasco’s girls squad was paced by senior Bailey Udey, who won the long jump, was second in the triple jump and second in a close 400 (personal best 1:06.91). Dufur’s Jacey Calloway won the one-lap race in 1:06.07. She also won the 300 hurdles in a PR 49.5 and ran legs on Dufur’s two first place girls relays. The 4x100 team of Hailee Pechanec, Calloway, Lily Egeland, and Ellie Brock ran 52.56 (No. 4 1A), and Alessandra Meza, Egeland, Brock and Calloway ran the 4x400 in 4:36.33.
Dufur’s Brock won the girls 800 in 2:37.83, and one event later did some speed work to win the 200 in 27.83 (season best). The Rangers were led in the field by Pechanec’s personal best wins in the girls shot put (30-6) and discus (95-9).
Sherman County was led by freshman Chloe Simpson, who won the girls high jump at 5 feet, and the triple jump in a personal best 33-7.5. Tyler Geary tossed the boys javelin a personal best 140-5 to finish second in that event.
Horizon Christian also had a win from senior Ethan Smallfoot in the boys pole vault; junior Milo Bielen was second to Kusky in the shot put and discus; and junior Karis Caldwell led the Hawks’ girls with her runner-up finish in the 100.
Glenwood competed at the Columbia River Invite on May 2 in Boardman. Senior Shane Spino placed in the top eight in three boys sprint races, including a season best 24.2 200. Giana Jackson led the Glenwood girls with her 13.63 100, and teammate Kerryna Thompson threw the javelin 96-5.
