In its first match back after spring break, the HRV girls tennis team was at home against Pendleton on Wednesday, April 4.
“We had somewhat of a shaky start against Pendleton,” said head coach Erin Mason. “And I knew it would be a little awkward as I had paired up two new doubles teams and had a new player at singles.”
But the girls would ultimately end up taking down the Buckaroos with the 5-3 win overall.
“I would say all in all we did just fine,” said Mason. “This was just a platform for us to improve from.”
The Eagles were led off by “solid” starts from their number one, two and three singles players.
In singles, the Eagles were led by Montsie Garrido as she took the victory over Pendleton’s number one.
At number two singles was Ruby Dosier for the Eagles. “This was a big step for Ruby who had played at number four singles last year a couple of time,” said Mason. “I threw her in at number 2 in this match, because I know she has the ability and I was correct.”
Dosier started out dropping the first set, but she would end up winning the second set 6-2, and then a 10-8 win in what was “a nail biting tie breaker,” said Mason.
The number three singles competition for the Eagles was a “similar story to Ruby’s number two match,” said Mason.
Jordan Ziegner in the number three singles match won her first set 6-2, but would go on to drop the second set 5-7 to move this match into a tie breaker set. In the tie breaker set, Ziegner would win 10-8 to claim the victory.
On the doubles side, the Eagles ended with victories at number one and three to decide the overall win for HRV.
“I will give a coach’s shout out to Kali Wetherell and Sally Evans, my number three doubles team,” said Mason.
Wetherell and Evans were quickly down 1-5 against Pendleton’s number three squad.
“I observed the match and developed a game plan based on what was working on the changeover at 1-4,” said Mason.
After the chat with Mason, Wetherell and Evans came back to win the first set 7-7, winning a first set tie breaker 7-3. They would then go on to win the second set by a final match score of 6-2.
“It was so awesome to see them overcome and win,” said Mason. “The game plan wasn’t fun for them, but it was effective.
“Overall, a great win for our team,” said Mason.
The match against Pendleton was the Eagles’ first conference match of the season, making them 1-0 in conference play and 2-1 overall. “I am happy with where we are,” said Mason.
Next up for the girls is a home matchup with Ridgeview on Saturday, April 7 at noon.
