The HRV girls tennis team this past weekend was on the road in Madras for the Steve Rankin Memorial Tournament.
Seven different school traveled to Madras for this tournament, but a total of eight team would compete: Vale, Henley, Crook County, Cascade (brought two teams), Sisters, Madras and HRV.
The format for this tournament consists only of number one and number two singles and doubles teams, with each match being the best of seven games.
Overall, the Eagles who traveled to Madras “played very well,” said head coach Erin Mason.
Montsie Garrido finished third overall at number one singles and Ruby Dosier finished second overall at number two singles.
As a team, the Eagles finished third overall with a 5-2-1 record out of the eight team that played. Vale was the overall winner of this tournament.
The Eagles first match was against Sisters.
Garrido dominated her opening singles match with a shutout 7-0 victory over Sisters’ number one.
At number two singles, Dosier was unable to pull away with the victory losing by a final score of 4-3.
Both doubles teams from HRV picked up the victory versus Sisters, giving the Eagles a 3-1 victory as a team.
Claire Oswald and Kirby Joseph won in their number one doubles match versus Sisters by a final score of 5-2.
Number two doubles for HRV, Sally Evans and Kali Wetherell, started off their day well with a dominate 6-1 victory.
The second match of the day for the Eagles would be against Crook County.
Again, Garrido looked tough to beat as she took a 6-1 victory in her second number one singles match of the day.
Dosier, after dropping the first singles match versus Sisters, bounced back against Crook County’s number two, winning by a final score of 6-1.
Both doubles teams for HRV, Oswald/Joseph and Evans/Wetherell, held on to 4-3 victories in their matches to give the Eagles team a sweep over Crook County, 4-0.
HRV’s only loss of the day came in the third match versus Henley.
Garrido and Dosier both loss 4-3 in their matches versus the number one and two from Henley.
Oswald and Joseph also dropped their match, losing by a final score of 5-2.
However, the Eagles did pick up one victory versus Henley as Evans and Wetherell in number two doubles held on to win by a final score of 4-3.
But the Eagles would lose the team event by a final of 3-1.
In the fourth match, the Eagles matched up against the host team Madras.
Garrido held off a comeback by the number one singles opponent from Madras, winning by a final score of 4-3.
Grabbing her second victory of the day was Dosier, as she won by a final score of 5-2 in her number two singles matchup.
Doubles would split matches, as Oswald and Joseph at number one doubles loss 5-2 versus Madras.
Evans and Wetherell would secure the Eagles 3-1 team victory as they beat the number two doubles team from Madras by a final score of 5-2.
Matches five and six would come against the two separate teams from Cascade.
The Eagles took the victory over Cascade Gold by a final of 3-1, with victories for Garrido and Dosier in singles and Evans and Wetherell in doubles.
Against the Cascade Black team, HRV tied 2-2.
Garrido and Dosier took victories in their respective singles matches, but both HRV doubles teams would drop their matches by final scores of 6-1.
In the final match of the day, HRV went up against the tournament champions: Vale.
The Eagles ended the day with a 4-0 loss to Vale, finishing the tournament with a team record of 5-2-1.
HRV’s next match was on the road in The Dalles on Tuesday, April 17 (results unavailable at press time).
