RJ ChavezLast week, the HRV girls lacrosse team had its biggest game of the regular season as the number one seed in the Portland League Conference was up for grabs in Hood River.
On Thursday, May 3 the conference undefeated Eagles matched up with the Lincoln Cardinals, the only other undefeated team in the PL conference.
Every minute of this game was needed to decide a winner, but ultimately, the Cardinals would come away with an 8-4 victory on the road to move to 4-0 in conference, while handing the Eagles its first loss of the season in conference (5-1).
The 8-4 home loss HRV suffered to Lincoln was the Eagles’ final home game of the season, as construction at Henderson field is underway.
Against the Cardinals, HRV was led by Abigail Bartles who had three of the Eagles four goals.
Bartles shot 3-4 from the field, while as a team, HRV shot a total of 4-10.
Josie Petersen was the other scorer on the day for HRV, as she went 1-2 on shot attempts versus Lincoln.
The Eagles picked up two assists on the four goals scored; Ashley Hendricks and Lauren Trumbull each had one assist.
Both HRV and Lincoln had eight turnovers on the day, but the Cardinals made more use of the open field opportunities, shooting 8-15 from the field.
Lincoln won the groundball matchup 15-13, while HRV had 15 draw controls won to the Cardinals’ eight.
Ella Rand saved four of the 12 Lincoln shots she saw come her way Thursday night, a save percentage of 33.3.
The loss for HRV moves the Eagles to 9-3 on the season and 5-1 in conference, while Lincoln is now 7-2 overall and 4-0 in conference.
Current PL conference standings: Lincoln (4-0), HRV (5-1), Oregon Episcopal School (5-2), Wilson (3-3), Grant (1-5), Central Catholic (1-4) and Cleveland (0-5).
Next up for the Eagles was a matchup on the road against Oregon Episcopal School on Monday, May 6. The Eagles beat OES by a final score of 11-10 (full story next edition).
