THE DALLES — The two-time Tri-Valley Conference champion The Dalles High Riverhawks are certainly looking as if they have the potential for a girls soccer league three-peat this year.
The No. 2-ranked Riverhawks (6-0) extended their win streak to six with a 7-0 non-league road victory at Astoria (0-2-1) on Sept. 19. Junior forward and leading scorer Ariana Gonzalez scored two goals to help lead the Riverhawks to the victory. The Riverhawks led 3-0 at halftime.
The Riverhawks, guided by longtime Coach Colby Tonn, have utilized a solid offense that is ranked No. 1 (5.83 goals per game average) out of 31 Class 4A squads. They’ve also played outstanding defense, allowing one goal so far this season and recording five shutouts.
“The thing that has been awesome this year is that we had five different players that scored against Astoria,” said Tonn. “We also had five players who scored in our season opener versus Pendleton (8-0 road win Sept. 4), including Tthree goals and four assists by Ariana. What makes the team so fun to watch is seeing how the girls are playing together so well as a team. Sometimes somebody might get a hat trick, but then we also usually have four other players scoring, as well.”
The Riverhawks played three games in five days, winning at home 8-0 over St. Helens (0-4) on Sept. 15; followed by a 2-1 home win Sept. 19 over La Grande (2-3-1). Gonzalez scored the game-winning goal on a first half penalty kick.
“Our starting goalkeeper, Olivia Prado, was injured recently, so Bryce Newby and Kaiya Doty have been alternating that position and they’ve both been doing a really good job,” said Tonn. “Ariana also played goalkeeper the last 10 minutes of the game against Astoria, and she did pretty well, too.
“The season has started off very well for sure. We have good team chemistry, everyone is playing very well to help us achieve the good results that we’ve had so far, and they’re all just a really fun group to work with.”
The Riverhawks are one of three unbeaten squads along with the No. 5-ranked Henley High Hornets (4-0-1) and the No. 10-ranked Stayton High Eagles (2-0-1). The Scappoose High Indians (3-1) were ranked No. 1 as of Sept. 21.
