THE DALLES — The Dalles won nine events at its annual season-opening Mullen-Leavitt Invitational track and field meet on a cold and rainy March 21.
The meet drew 15 schools of varying sizes to the Wahtonka track. No team scores were kept, but the host Riverhawks were well represented in most events.
The Dalles had two boys double winners in sophomore sprinter David McCracken, who won the 100- and 200-meter races, and River McClure, who won the high jump and 300 low hurdles. McCracken won the100 in 11.66 seconds and the 200 in 24.31. McClure cleared a personal best 5 feet, 10 inches in the high jump won the hurdle race in 41.89.
Coach Garth Miller’s team also received wins from junior Laura Black in the girls 400 (1:06.74); Willow Ziegenhagen in the girls high jump (PR 4 feet, 10 inches); and Tyson Long in the boys 3000 (PR 9:31.49). Long paced junior teammate Aiden Erickson and Caleb Caldwell (a senior from Horizon Christian, who ran cross country at The Dalles) to personal bests. The running mates finished within four seconds of each other — Erickson in 9:33 73 and Caldwell in 9:35.8.
The Dalles’ other two wins came in relays. The Riverhawk 4x100 team of Sydney Newby, Ziegenhagen, Ebany Mondragon, and Marie-Louise McCracken won in 54.72. On the boys side, The Dalles won the short relay in 45.06. The team included Derek Goulart, McCracken, McClure, and Julian Morehouse.
Also of note for The Dalles were senior Alaina Casady’s distance double and the 1-2-3 Riverhawk finish in the boys high jump. Casady was third in a quick early season 800 in 2:39.91 and third in the1500 in 5:15.94. McClure had teammates Goulart and Shea Anderson finished behind him in the high jump at 5-8 and 5-6, respectively. Morehouse cleared 13 feet to finish second in the pole vault.
