PORTLAND – The Dalles High School’s girls cross country team improved its standing among the state’s Class 4A schools with its performance at the Oct. 18 Stumptown Showdown at Portland’s Lent’s Park.
The Riverhawks, competing against mostly larger schools, finished 14th out of 18 scoring teams. But two of The Dalles’ seven runners registered lifetime bests and five had season bests. The improvement by Coach Jill Bell’s runners has the team in the Tri-Valley League district meet title conversation – something the Riverhawks have been accustomed to in recent seasons.
The Dalles’ tight scoring pack over the 5,000-meter course at Stumptown included: Abigail Pope, 59th, 20 minutes, 33 seconds (season best); Alessandra Mesa, 83rd, 21:05 (personal best); Laura Black, 92nd, 21:18 (SB); Josie Brace, 96th, 21:22; and Kestley Hodges, 102nd, 21:28 (SB).
The Dalles boys were 16th out of 21 teams and led by senior Tyson Long, who was 58th in 16:53. Luke Sorenson was three seconds back in 65th; Zeb Stelzer was 86th (17:18); Lazarus Taylor was 109th, 17:48 (PR); and Phoenix Nanie was 116th in 17:56 (PR).
The Dalles will compete in one more regular season meet – the Oct. 21 Valiant Invitational in Beaverton - and then host the Tri-Valley District meet Oct. 29 at Sorosis Park in The Dalles.
