THE GORGE —The Klickitat/Glenwood boys basketball team won its first two games in the opening week of the 2025-26 Class 1A season.
Coach Dion Curtis’ squad came from behind to win its Dec. 3 opener at home over “friendly rival” Lyle/Wishram, 62-57, and then topped Mannahouse Christian in Portland, 51-43, on Dec. 6.
Xavier Cloud’s steal and tap-ahead assist to Shane Spino was a pivotal play in the closing minutes, allowing the Vandals to separate late against Mannahouse. Owen Spino scored five of his team’s final seven points in the closing minutes against Lyle, as the Vandals pulled away from a 57-57 deadlock.
South Wasco County (2-1) won two lopsided games before losing at home in overtime to Class 2A Crosshill Christian of Turner, 54-50, in a playoff-style atmosphere on Dec. 6 in Maupin. The game was tight throughout, with the Redsides holding an 18-17 halftime lead.
South Wasco started the third period 0-for-7 from the field before Jason Hull led a comeback from a 25-18 deficit. He scored 10 of his team’s next 12 points — including a buzzer-beating bank to end the period — as the Redsides pulled within 33-32 heading into the fourth quarter.
Hull’s 3-pointer with two seconds remaining sent the game into overtime, but Crosshill led the entire extra period to pull out the road win.
Horizon Christian won its Dec. 5 opener at Damascus Christian, 44-37, behind the double figure scoring of Ben Chapman, Landon Whitaker, and Charlie Haynie. But the shorthanded Hawks had no answer a day later against visiting Open Door Christian, which won, 63-22.
Sherman County dropped a couple of road games before winning Dec. 6, 58-49, over Pine Eagle in the Cove Mt. Fanny Classic.

Senior guard Emma Patterson scored 21 of her 28 points in the first half of a 66-21 win Dec. 4 over Willamette Valley Christian. She had 21 of her team’s 35 first-half points in a 52-14 win over Pacific on Dec. 5.
Horizon Christian won, 45-36, at Damascus Christian on Dec. 5 and 44-37 at home over Open Door. Freshman guard Lou Lou Belcher led the Hawks with double-scoring efforts in both games.
Dufur won 50-43 on Dec. 6 over visiting CS Lewis Academy. The Rangers’ junior post Cadence Young scored seven of her 11 points in the fourth quarter as Dufur broke away from a 40-40 tie after three periods. Junior Hailee Pechanec led the Rangers with 20 points, including 12 in the first half when Dufur used its full-court 2-2-1 press to build an early 12-3 lead.
