Two local water polo players were selected to represent the Pacific Northwest Zone at the 2015 Olympic Development Program Championships held this year in Riverside, Calif.
Jamie Robinson, 13, was chosen for the youth 16 and under age group. Cole Sischo, 11, was chosen for the development 13-and-under age group, reported Dave Cameron, who coaches Hood River Valley High School’s water polo team along with Kellie Dunn.
The Olympic Development Program serves to identify and develop athletes to represent USA Water Polo throughout national and international competition. In November 2014, the selection process for ODP began across the country. Most zones were allowed to select 14 athletes (two goalies, twelve field players) to attend the nationals. Training has been ongoing and will culminate with the nationals. From the nationals, officials will select athletes for National Training and Selection Camp for each age group. Players will participate in national team training and competition that will run from April through August.
The national program is divided into 13 zones, each of which is allowed to send one team to the national championships. These 16 teams will competed in the national championship, with boys playing earlier this month, and girls the past weekend. Results were not available as of press time.
“Not only do these young athletes get to participate in a national event, they will also bring back a wealth of information to share with the rest of our Hood River Water Polo players,” Cameron said.
