The Athletics East program already had a season full of highlights and records, and there was another chapter added to the book this past weekend at the USATF Region 13 Meet, held at Lane Community College in Eugene, as all 16 runners on the roster qualified for nationals, and Juan Diego Contreras claimed first place overall.
Already facing more than 3,000 of the best harriers, 10 Athletics East participants had to deal with high elevation, below freezing temperatures, snow and mud on Dec. 8 at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships in Reno, Nev. As the program’s first team to compete on the national stage, this group finished 13th out of 19 teams.
Less than two years after picking up the sport, Kevin Beeson is a national pickleball champion. The tournament was Nov. 2-9 in Palm Springs, Calif., at Indian Wells Tennis Center, Palm Springs.
While running stride-for-stride with such a competitive group, The Dalles High School freshman Dillon Dorado finished with a time of 18 minutes and 59.30 seconds for 238th in the 15-to-18-year old division and 146th in his 15-to-16 age category at the USATF Junior Olympic Nationals held on Dec. 9 at Apalachee Regional Park, Fla.
Facing off against a group of 37 competitive runners in the 15-to-18-year old classification, The Dalles trio of Sam Alvarez, Michael Lantz and Dillon Dorado qualified to participate in the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships after standout regional performances this past Saturday at Woodland Zoo Park in Seattle, Wash.
Tucker Fitzsimons, 19, a 2016 Hood River Valley High School grad and college freshman, won the Open Class Men’s Rail Jam at the 2017 USA Snowboard and Freeski Association (USASA) Freestyle Skier National Championships last week.
Fresh off her state competition at Mt. Hood Meadows, Hood River Valley High School sophomore Elexis McAllister will be heading to Copper Springs, Colo., to compete in the United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association (USASA) Nationals April 1-10, but needs the community’s help in getting there.
