THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks had hoped to end their slump last week in OSAA Class 4A baseball, but they lost several close nonleague games instead. The defending Tri-Valley Conference (TVC) champion Riverhawks were scheduled to start their 15-game league schedule this week.
The Riverhawks (2-9) ended their nonleague schedule with three close losses against three, 2024 state playoff teams, including a 5-0 home loss to April 8 to the Pendleton High Buckaroos (5-6).
“We didn’t play too bad against Pendleton, and we had to face their best pitcher, too,” said Coach Pat Clark. “Part of the losing streak is because we’ve played against every team’s ace pitcher. … Pendleton had their best pitcher, who is really good; we were making contact and swinging well, but we just couldn’t score any runs. Our guys pitched okay, but we just had one bad inning where we gave up three runs and that turned out to be the turning point of the game.”
The Riverhawks (2-6) followed with a long road trip as they faced the No. 7-ranked Philomath High Warriors (6-2) April 10. The game was a rematch of a May 22, 2024 first-round home playoff game (a 6-3 Riverhawk win). The Warriors got a little revenge with a 6-4 victory at Philomath High School.
“I don’t think anyone expected this (slump) to happen, but we did build a tough nonleague schedule,” said Clark. “I think things would look a little different if we had played a little easier schedule of games. I never expected us to have this record, but we’re working through it. The good thing is the kids are still working hard, and their attitude is good. At this point we’re putting our focus on league play and that’s all that really matters.”
The Riverhawks had a great opportunity to end their slump in an April 11, road matchup versus the No. 8-ranked Newport High Cubs (7-3) but lost 7-6.
“The tough schedule was good in a sense because we’ve really been tested,” said Clark. “We’re competing well, and we’ll get better. There’s no disrespect to the teams in our league, but we feel like the toughest part of our schedule is over. We feel like we’re going to be ready when league starts.”
Their next two opponents are against Crook County (2-5) April 14 and 16, and Madras (2-7) April 17 and 21.
