The Hood River Valley High School gymnasium was packed to the rafters Friday evening for the HRV varsity wrestling team’s final dual match of the season. The Eagles were unable to pull out a win against the visiting Bend Lava Bears, losing 50-24 against their Special District 4 opponents.
However, in what HRV Head Coach Trent Kroll said was their debut match “under the light in competition,” the girls team won eight of its nine matches (full results not available as of press time).
Highlighting Friday’s matches for the varsity were victories by top wrestlers Jason Shaner and Noah Wachsmuth, who pinned their opponents in two minutes, 56 seconds and 46 seconds, respectively. Trystan Keely also had a pin, defeating Bend’s Peter Miller in five minutes flat.
Other varsity wrestlers securing wins Friday night included seniors Mark Reyes, who defeated Jason Soto in a 7-2 decision, and Oscar Villegas, who was awarded a 5-0 decision over Lorenzo Perez.
Other senior wrestlers for HRV Friday night included Payton Rigert, Joanna Endow, Beatriz Najera, Katerina Vackova, Junior Manzo, Max Lane, and Trystan Fisher.
On Saturday, both the varsity and the girls competed in the annual Elks Invitational in Hood River. The boys placed eighth of 20 teams, losing to district opponents Bend and Mountain View, but defeated The Dalles. The girls placed 15th out of 22 teams.
The varsity did not come away with any individual wins, but featured second-place finishes by Shaner and Manzo. Also reaching the podium were Wachsmuth, Dylan Peterson, and Adrian Ramirez, who placed fourth, sixth, and sixth, respectively.
The lone win for either team came at the hands of Vackova, who defeated all her opponents by fall. Also reaching the podium were Lexie McCafferty (second), Monique Yanez (third), Endow (fourth), Grace Miller (third), Elena Kroll (fifth), and Christine Marquez (third).
Elks member George Johnson said the tournament, which he said was in its 20th year, raised $1,800 for the wrestling scholarship program through concessions, membership donations, community support, and volunteer efforts.
