The HRV track and field teams continued to improve with many athletes recording personal best efforts in the 17-team Dean Nice Invitational Meet April 28 at Gresham High School.
The Eagles, guided by Coach Brandon Bertram, had 18 athletes who recorded personal records in their events. Jesse Wiley had the only first-place finish for HRV, taking the 1500-meter run with a personal record of 4 minutes, 10.32 seconds. Jacob Bromham ran a PR to get fourth in the 3000 at 9:13.13, which is the top mark in the Columbia River Conference this year.
“We had lots of kids who showed a big improvement while getting PRs and setting season bests in events, so we’re definitely on the right path with everyone getting in good physical shape,” said Bertram. “We had a good look at Hermiston and The Dalles, which was important too, so it was a very good meet for us.”
The combined 35 member boys and girls Eagle squad competed very well against 16 other schools, which included those in 6A. The Eagle girls, led by Lottie Bromham and Audrey Marble, had a strong performance as well. Bromham took third in the 1500, running a PR of 5:05.99. Marble entered three events and ran exceptionally well, including a season-best of 1:02.60 in the 400, good for fourth. The boys placed fifth and the girls placed 13th overall.
“Overall, I was really impressed with our senior boys and there’s not very many of them, since we’re primarily a young team,” said Bertram. “They’ve put in a lot of hard work this year and they’re coming towards the end of their track career, so it’s nice seeing them do so well. Jacob Bromham and Jesse Wiley are a couple of just a few kids who trained hard all winter and they’ve run many miles the last three years, so it was really fun to watch them have such a strong performance Friday. On our girls team, Audrey Marble had a great day and all the girls are improving a lot while finding events that they can be successful in. The girls have high expectations for themselves and they’re excited to be running faster at this point of the season.”
The HRV boys defending state champion 4x100 relay squad took fourth as Owen Ramsey, Hunter Klein, Patrick Estes and Gabriel Campos-Davis timed in at 44.71. The 4x400 relay squad of Ramsey, Campos-Davis, Robby Running and Chad Klaas took fifth at 3:30.31, which ranks as one of the top-five times in the state this year. It was a solid showing by both relay teams, since they were running strong against tough competition from 6A schools Barlow, Clackamas, Gresham, Franklin, South Salem and Willamette.
HRV’s next meet is a dual today at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Oregon City. It’s the final regular season meet for HRV prior to the CRC championships May 10-11 at Hermiston.
