The Eagles have screamed down the mountain in every race they’ve competed in this year, and Saturday’s giant slalom (GS) competition on the Middle Fork run at Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort was no different.
Both the boys and the girls teams took first place in the Mt. Hood League competition, and were far out in front of their opponents. The boys posted a combined time of 5 minutes, 1.28 seconds, ahead of second-place Sandy by 26 seconds. The team also beat The Dalles, Grant, and Cleveland. The girls combined for a nearly identical time (5:01.92) and were 28 seconds ahead of second-place St. Mary’s Academy, also defeating Cleveland, Sandy, The Dalles, and Grant.
With just one race left to go in the season — a slalom competition on the Reynolds run at Mt. Hood Skibowl this Saturday — HRV is essentially uncatchable in the league once again, with the boys and girls winning every competition they’ve entered this year.
For the second race in a row, HRV sophomore Josie Petersen was the fastest female on the mountain, placing first overall with a combined time of 1:39.23, scoring twice for HRV. Chloe Kurahara (second, 1:41.14) also scored twice for HRV, as did Erin Sutherland (third, 1:41.55).
All HRV racers who competed landed in the top 10, including association team member Mattea Schwabe (sixth, 1:44.09), who goes to Horizon. She was closely followed by Paris Nunn (seventh, 1:45.68), Reed Bauer (eighth, 1:47.03), and Eva Jones (ninth, 1:48.76).
For the boys, Colin Howe, who goes to Columbia but trains with HRV, finished first overall with a combined two-run time of 1:35.77. Chris McElwee, who scored twice for the Eagles, was less than two-tenths of a second behind that, and finished second. He had the fastest run of the day, posting a time of 47.31 on his first attempt.
Colson Zack, who scored for the Eagles on both his runs, placed fifth with a time of 1:42.17. Oskar Anderson (seventh, 1:43.32) and Nash Levy (ninth, 1:45.20) scored for HRV as well. William Lamer (10th, 1:46.73) and Ezra Johnson (18th, 1:54.76) competed for HRV Saturday too.
After Saturday’s race at Ski Bowl, the team will have some time off from competition before competing in the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Association state championships March 1-3 at Meadows.
