HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley (HRV) girls soccer team beat Milwaukie, 9-1, on senior night Oct. 28, earning the Northwest Oregon Conference’s (NWOC’s) No. 3 seed into the 2025 Class 5A state playoffs.
The Eagles (10-4-1, 6-2), led by coach Kevin Haspela, took control early and never let up, while the Mustangs (4-10, 0-8) couldn’t find solutions to the Eagles’ offensive attack. It was a dominant performance for HRV right before the 5A playoffs, which begin with first-round matches Nov. 4. The Eagles play at Silverton (12-1-2) at 7 p.m.; the Silver Foxes were co-champions of the Mid-Willamette Conference.
“It was good to see them grow into the game,” Haspela said. “At first, I thought we could have cleaned up our touches and possessed the ball a little bit more, and they did just that after the first 10 minutes. I think we ran the show from there on, and some really good goals and exciting play, but most importantly, the energy is really high, and everyone’s excited. Obviously, it’s really fun to honor our seniors, but to play good soccer and score good goals is icing on the cake for us.
“This is our highest finish in the league since we’ve been in the league.”
Hood River finished in a three-way tie for second with La Salle Prep and Putnam — behind NWOC champion Wilsonville.
Senior Yareli Hernandez got the ball rolling for HRV against Milwaukie, with her first goal of the half 12 minutes into the match. Senior and UC Santa Barbara commit, Magnolia Clermont, also scored her first goal of the half with 20:25 left to put the Eagles up 2-0.
Clermont scored a few minutes later followed by a goal from junior Keira Brennan. Hernandez knocked in her second goal of the first half — as did Clermont — for a 6-0 HRV halftime lead.
Sophomore Lily Clermont, senior Izabella Galvez, and senior Jenicca Riggert added second half goals for HRV. Riggert’s tally ended the game by triggering the eight-point lead mercy rule.
