Horizon girls move to 4-3 in league play

The Hawks initially fell behind as Sherman got out to an early 13-8 lead after one quarter.

But a 14-9 response in the second quarter by the Hawks would tie this game up at 22 apiece heading into halftime.

The Hawks would keep this game close in the third as they were only outscored by two and were down 33-31.

Even though the girls had kept this game close through three quarters, they were going to need to outscore Sherman in the final quarter to come away with the win.

In the fourth, Sherman once again outscored Horizon 11-9 and the Hawks fell by a final score of 44-40.

The Hawks’ troubles on Friday night came in the turnover column, as they had 19 as a team. They also struggled from the field, shooting 32 percent on 16-50 shooting.

Sophomore Fiona Marsalis led the Hawks in scoring versus Sherman with 17 on the night. She also added five offensive rebounds and three steals.

Marsalis was the only Hawk in double figures Friday night, but Kaitlin Wenz and Marena Decker were close with nine points.

Wenz filled up her stat sheet with 11 rebounds, four steals and three assists to go with her nine points.

The girls would quickly turn things around the following day as they took care of business at home versus Condon/Wheeler.

The girls took the lead early on and never looked back.

Horizon opened the first quarter up 16-10 and went into halftime with a comfortable 27-18 lead.

Condon/Wheeler would find a spark of offense in the third, outscoring the Hawks 18-16 to cut Horizon’s lead to 43-36.

But the Hawks would hold on as senior guard Alexis Ruiz scored eight of the Hawks 19 total points in the fourth to take the 62-50 win at home, moving Horizon to 4-3 in 1A-6 Big Sky League competition.

Ruiz’s eight points in the fourth was crucial in securing the Hawks the win versus Condon/Wheeler, but she was the third leading scorer last Saturday with 14 points total.

The Hawks leading scorer was Marsalis.

She ended the night with 24 points and 20 rebounds, 13 of those being offensive. She also added three assists and three steals.

The second leading scorer was Wenz, who had 21 points. Wenz was just short of a double-double as she tallied in nine assists, along with four rebound and three assists.

Next up for the girls is an away game at Dufur on Friday, Jan. 26. The Hawks will be home the following day on Saturday, Jan. 27 for a matchup against Arlington; tip-off 4 p.m.
