The Big Sky League Class 1A volleyball season is winding down and the frontrunners, South Wasco, Sherman and Dufur, each won games last week to help them build momentum for the upcoming district playoffs Oct. 23 at Echo High School.

The Lyle/Wishram/Klickitat High Cougars were seeking a fifth straight win in Special District 2 eight-man football versus the No. 15 ranked Imbler Panthers (2-2 SD2, 3-3 overall), but their win streak ended Friday in a 30-16 road loss.

The No. 12-ranked Cougars (3-2, SD2, 4-2 overall), guided by Coach Antoine Montoya, will be hoping to bounce back and get a win in their next game versus the Union Bobcats (0-5 SD2, 0-6 overall) at home Friday at 6 p.m. at Lyle High School.

Between Sept. 1 and Sept. 8, schools in Wasco and Sherman counties reported 19 cases of COVID-19. School-based cases can be reported among students, staff or volunteers. None were due to transmission in the school setting, according to a press release from North Central Public Health District (NCPHD).

The Sherman County High Huskies football team has one its largest turnout of players as second-year coach Kyle Blagg welcomed a group of 24 athletes to the first practice on Aug. 16 at Sherman High in Moro. With more players, Sherman returns to the OSAA Class 1A eight-man football level for the first time since 2018. The Huskies competed the last two years in the Special District 4 six-man league.
