Closing out what has been the winningest girls lacrosse season in the history of the HRV program, the Eagles girls lax team added another win to their pile Monday night, defeating the Central Catholic Rams, 10-5, on Senior Night in Hood River. It was the second win in as many games against the Rams for HRV.
For a team that has performed well this season, boasting an 11-3 overall record and a 9-3 record in the Portland League (which they finished second), HRV Head Coach Andrew McElderry could afford to be a little critical of the team’s play Monday. The team gave up the first two goals to Central Catholic and didn’t score until eight minutes remaining in the half.
“The girls really had a hard time finding their groove tonight,” McElderry said via email after the game. “Several of them were really affected/emotional about senior night. In the end we were able to pull off a win, but, it wasn’t pretty and it wasn’t Hood River Lacrosse.”
Still, HRV did eventually find its footing to outscore Central Catholic by a 2:1 ratio. The seniors were big in their final home game of the regular season, with goals by Ellen Hudon (2), Sam Davies (1), Erin Mayer (1), and Lydia McElderry. Also scoring for HRV were Abby Bartles (2), Blair Holman (1), Kat McElderry (1), and Lauren Orr (1). Sophomore goalie Ella Rand, who has had a breakout season, got the job done, saving six of 11 shots (55 percent).
The Eagles now turn their attention to the postseason, which is different this season. Instead of the top 24 teams lumped into one bracket, the league champions and the next six overall-ranked teams play each other in the Gold bracket, while the remaining teams play in the Navy bracket. McElderry said he liked the new format, stating that “it will be a lot more competitive and fun for all.”
McElderry said Monday that HRV was seeded second in the Navy bracket, although not all teams had finished their season, so final playoff seeding and opponent weren’t known as of press time. He added that “unless something changes significantly, we should have a bye the first round and host a quarterfinals game here in Hood River.” Check the Hood River News for updates.
