THE GORGE — The Dalles High School’s cross country team participated in a unique event Sept. 19 in Yakima, WA., where runners had the option of competing over three, three-mile courses.
The Riverhawks spread out their athletes over each course at the Apple Ridge Run Invite. The Dalles girls fielded a complete team in one of the races, over the Race course, which the Riverhawks won by edging Hanford, 45-46. Josie Brace, Gabriela Dominguez Bahena, Marley Perry, Brittany Irving and Amery Linker combined for the team score, finishing in 10th, 13th, 17th, 19th, and 29th respectively.
Alessandra Meza and Rozlyn Elliott competed in the Orchard Loop three-mile course, where Meza was fifth and Elliott 13th. Meza’s time of 21 minutes, 24 seconds was a school record for three miles. Ellie Brock was the top finisher for the Riverhawk girls in the Figure 8 course in 23rd place.
The Dalles boys finished 10th as a team over the Race course and were led by Lazarus Taylor, who was seventh in 16 minutes, 41 seconds. The Riverhawks also fielded a complete team of five runners in the Figure 8 course, where they were 11th and led by Steven Chavez’ 24th place. Luke Sorenson and Zeb Stelzer were fourth and fifth in the race on the Orchard Loop, both timed in 17:05.
Columbia and Trout Lake competed at a five-school race on the hilly Strawberry Island 5,000-meter course on Sept. 15 in North Bonneville. La Center won the girls meet with 33 points, to 46 for Columbia. Stevenson was third with 50, while Trout Lake did not field a scoring team of five runners. Melody Stock of Trout Lake won the race in 20:29, besting runner-up Daisy Jones of Stevenson (in 20:31) and Lilah Zimmerman of Columbia (20:47).
Columbia’s other team scorers were Kathryn O’Connor (7th, 22:12); Maya Tama (14th, 23:59); Edna O’Connor (16th, 24:35); and Emme Lloyd (19th, 25:12). Trout Lake’s Felicity Peck was fourth in 21:15.
La Center also won the boys race with 28 points, followed by Columbia with 47, Trout Lake with 80, and Stevenson with 89. Trout Lake/Glenwood’s top finisher was runner-up Joby Steward who was five seconds (in 18:12) behind the winner, Lou Kissinger of La Center.
Columbia had the fourth, sixth, 11th, 13th and 17th finishers in Colby Clark (18:38); Luther Thomas (19:01); Jack Brooks (19:18); Oliver Brokenshire (19:29); and Everett Coyner (19:50). Behind Steward for Trout Lake/Glenwood were Merrek Stock (14th, 19:38); Anthony Avila (21st, 20:21); Nathanael Lambert (27th, 21:01); and Johannes Lambert (37th, 22:21).
Sherman’s T’Sharra Lanthorn led the Huskies at the Sept. 18 Hawk Invite in Walla Walla, WA., where she finished in 30th place (23:35 for 5,000 meters).
