The HRV girls lax team bowled over yet another opponent Friday night, defeating Liberty 14-3 in a nonleague game and continuing what has been a stellar start to the season for the Eagles.
Through six games, HRV has a 5-1 overall record and sits at second place in the Portland League (behind Oregon Episcopal School) with a 3-1 record. The team also boasts an impressive goal differential of 47-22.
Friday night in Hood River saw HRV quickly build a multi-goal advantage in just a few minutes of play in the Eagles vs. Eagles matchup. As they’ve done in so many games this season, HRV relied on a productive first half to carry the team through the remainder of the game. Though Liberty (3-4, 1-1 league) made a few trips into HRV’s zone, not much came of them, with HRV limiting Liberty to just 10 shots while putting up 24.
“(I) didn’t know what to expect from Liberty,” said HRV Head Coach Andrew McElderry. “Regardless, Hood River continued to march forward and focus on playing Hood River Lacrosse, regardless of the opponent.”
McElderry said Assistant Coach Bekah Rottenberg made the observation that the team needed to tighten up on defense and the Eagles executed well Friday night, limiting Liberty’s shots while Ella Rand cleaned up with an “excellent night in the cage,” stopping seven of 10 shots.
On the offensive side, McElderry said players “had a little fun, trying some new shots with great success.” Erin Mayer led the team in scoring with four goals and Lydia McElderry was next with three. Abby Bartles and Blair Holman had a pair each, while Savanna Brentlinger, Sam Davies, and Kat McElderry each had one. The McElderry sisters, along with Brentlinger, Bartles, Ellen Hudon, and Daisy Dolan also had an assist each in the game.
Dolan had a team-high four ground balls and Rebecca Kiyokawa wasn’t far behind with three. Dolan and Mayer combined for seven won draws (four and three, respectively), with McElderry noting that both have been doing a good job “teaming up and winning us that key possession off the draw.” Riley Bauer led the team in caused turnovers, with two.
On Friday, HRV will head to Portland to play Cleveland (2-4, 1-4 league) for the second time this season and then hosts Grant (3-3, 3-2) in another league game April 19 at 7 p.m.
