WHITE SALMON — Samantha Evans set a school record in the high jump and Sara Miller won the 100 meters to lead individual performances by the Columbia High School track and field team at the May 2 Panther Twilight at Washougal High School.
Evans, a sophomore, cleared 5 feet, 4.5 inches in the girls high jump, which was a half inch higher than the previous Bruin record shared by three former CHS athletes.
Miller, a junior, who is among the top five on the school’s all-time list in the 100 meters, 200 and 400, won the 100 at the 10-team meet in 12.41 seconds. She was second in the 200 meters in 26.2 and was third in the 400 in 1:02.61.
Columbia’s girls scored 103 team points to finish second behind W.F. West.
Saylor Hauge, who broke the school record in the 300 hurdles April 23, was second in that race at Washougal in 47.32. Hauge has run faster than 50 seconds in all seven of her 300 races this season, including the school record time of 46.9.
Hauge, Miller, Sequoia Cohen, and Willow Cohen combined to run a season best 51.34 and win the 4x100 relay. That time is the fastest in WIAA District 4 through May 3.
There were plenty of other highlights at the meet for Coach Jim Anderson’s Bruin girls squad. Hauge also was third in the high jump at 5 feet; Sequoia Cohen was third in the 100 hurdles in 17.93; Lilah Zimmerman was third in the 1600 in a season best 5:37.74; Helen Hoskins was third in the 3200 and fourth in the 1600; Olivia Allen ran a 2:41.4 800; and Amya Shaw bounded a PR 30-9 in the triple jump.
On the boys side, junior Graham Beck ran a PR 11.8 in the 100; Hunter Wang ran the 300 hurdles in 44.74; Ezekiel Wilson Ramirez threw a season best 122-5 in the discus; fellow freshman Simon Caldwell and Jaime Perez each cleared lifetime bests of 5-8 in the high jump; and Perez went 19-4.5 in the long jump.
Bruins, Hawks compete midweek at Stevenson
Columbia High School, Horizon Christian and La Center competed in a four-way track and field meet at host Stevenson High School April 30.
The Bruin boys were led by freshman Jaime Perez, who won the long jump with a personal best 19 feet, 5 inches, and the high jump at 5-7. Senior Garrett Kock bounded to a personal best 38-3.5 in the triple jump to complete the Bruin sweep in the jumps.
Columbia sprinter Graham Beck was third in the 100 meters (11.86) and later ran a lifetime best in the 200 meters in 24.29. Hurdlers Aidan Hainline (third 100 highs, 17.96) and Hunter Wang (second 300 intermediates) also placed high in their specialties and combined with Zephyr Pytel and Graham Beck on the Bruins’ second place 4x100 relay (46.98).
Junior Sophia Bucher won the shot put in a lifetime best of 29 feet — one of four individual wins for the Columbia girls. Sara Miller won the 100 (12.97), Saylor Hauge won the 300 hurdles (48.08), and Samantha Evans won the high jump (5-1). Columbia also won the 4x100 relay as Sequoia Cohen, Hauge, Willow Cohen and Miller ran 52.48.
Other marks and times of note for the Bruin girls were Hauge’s 5-0 high jump; the 2-3-4 finish of Sequoia Cohen, Mariela Casarez and Hailey Tolbert in the 100 hurdles; Casarez’s 53.59 300 hurdle clocking; Olivia Allen and Maya Tama’s 2-4 finish in the 800 (2:40.86 and 2:47.1); and Lilah Zimmerman and Helen Hoskins’ 2-3 finish in the 1600 (5:42.98 and 5:43.61 PR).
Horizon Christian was led by the double win of senior Hannah Adams, who also was second in the 300 hurdles in a season best 53.14. Adams won the high hurdles in 16.48 and the pole vault at 8-6.
Efforts by senior Josiah Roberts and freshman Charlie Haynie paced the Hawk boys. Roberts had two personal bests – in the shot put (41-8.25) and discus (129-1) — and won each event. Haynie won both hurdles races; the 110s in 16.07 and the 300s in 43.72 (PR).
Other top times and marks for Horizon were Caleb Caldwell’s school record 2:03.96 in the 800 and Landon Whitaker’s 18-9 long jump. Those two joined Brayden Strong and Aaron Johnson to run the 4x400 relay in 3:46.45 and place second behind La Center.
