The No. 5 ranked Class 5A Hood River Valley High Eagles continued their non-league softball schedule last week while playing three games versus Class 4A squads, winning one of them.
The Eagles (3-2) lost 9-1 to visiting Pendleton (5-2) on March 18 at Westside Elementary School in Hood River. It marked HRV’s fourth straight loss to Pendleton; the last time the Eagles beat the Buckaroos was a 6-5 win on May 4, 2019.
The Eagles lost 2-1 to the top-ranked 4A team, St. Helens (6-0), on March 21 at St. Helens High School. The Eagles responded at day later by winning at home, 12-5, over the Molalla High Indians (3-3).
In the Molalla game, the Eagles took a 1-0 first inning lead on an RBI single by junior Grace Rowan (2-for-4), driving home freshman Addison Van Metre (4-for-4, two RBI), who earlier reached the basepath with a double. The Eagles took control of the game with a fifth-inning offensive outburst.
Aided by four Indian errors, the Eagles sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs, highlighted by Van Metre’s RBI triple. Reagan Mooney, Rowan and Sarah Mason each hit RBI singles, and Adamari Lazaro had a sacrifice fly RBI to contribute to the game-changing rally that put the Eagles up 8-2.
The Eagles scored four times in the sixth inning, highlighted by freshman Grace Hanshaw’s two RBI single. Lazaro and Van Metre both hit RBI doubles in the four-run rally to put the Eagles up 12-4.
Sophomore pitcher Kenadie Lucas (1-for-3, single) had nine strikeouts in the pitching circle for HRV.
