The seven-member The Dalles High Riverhawks boys and girls ski team competed in the third Mt. Hood League event Feb. 4 in a giant slalom race at Mt. Hood Meadows.
Freshman two-sport winter athlete Kaiya Doty was ninth overall and Kailee Klindt was 14th for the girls team. Doty’s two-run time was 1 minute, 50.76 seconds among the 56 competitors.
“Kaiya and Kailee both did very well,” said Coach Dane Klindt. “Kailee had a rough first run [58.40], but she came back and did better on her second run [56.38] and Kaiya just did great and got another top-10 finish.”
The finish was the second consecutive top-10 effort by Doty, who is also a member of the Riverhawk girls swim team.
The Riverhawks boys squad was led by junior Ari D’Arso, who finished 51st out of 53 total skiers with his two run time of 2:49.36. Eighth grader Caden Nordquist finished 36th at 2:26.61.
Riverhawk seniors Henry Perez and Cooper Klindt each fell during their runs. “It’s kind of been a weird season, because at the beginning, the lack of snow made it difficult for us to do any training,” said Cooper Klindt, who had a season-best fifth place Jan. 28. “The tough weather conditions shortened our season, because the first two races were canceled because of not enough snow.”
Perez had a first run of 51.97 seconds, the fourth-best time to that point. He fell on his second run. Klindt crashed on his first run but came back for a second run of 53.37 seconds.
