LYLE — The Lyle/Wishram/Klickitat/Glenwood Cougar football team beat the Echo High School Cougars, 58-28, in an OSAA 1A Special District 3 (SD3) showdown on Oct. 17 in Lyle.
Lyle (5-3), led by head coach Dave Devoe, entered the game coming off a forfeit win against Pilot Rock/Ukiah on Oct. 9. Lyle jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter. But Echo outscored the home team 20-14 in a high-scoring first half.
“We give them a little bit of guidance, but mostly it’s my players. My players are great players,” Devoe said of his team. “They’ve been playing this same system for six years, and they adjust and they figure things out.” Look no further than Carson Ramsay, who finished with seven touchdowns.
Shane Spino started things off for Lyle with a 65-yard, pick-six with 7:41 left in the first. Echo fumbled on its ensuing possession, giving the ball back to Lyle near midfield. Jack Thiemann got a 25-yard gain off a pass from Mason Ramsay to put Lyle in position to score. Carson Ramsay finished off the drive with a five-yard touchdown run with five minutes left in the first period.
Mason Ramsay found Carson Ramsay for a 20-yard touchdown pass with 2:32 left in the first. Thiemann’s one-handed interception set up the host team on offense again, and a short time later, Carson Ramsay would take off for a 66-yard touchdown run with 1:55 left in the opening quarter.
Carson Ramsay gave Lyle a 30-14 second period lead on a 50-yard rushing touchdown. The winners also got a 52-yard TD run from Carson Ramsay in the second quarter en route to a 38-20 advantage.
Lyle’s second-half scores came on an 84-yard Mason Ramsay to Carson Ramsay pass play; a Mason Ramsay to Thiemann 37-yard TD pass; and a 53-yard Carson Ramsay TD run.
