WHITE SALMON — The Columbia High Bruins (6-0) remained undefeated after sweeping a WIAA Trico League Class 1A softball April 9 home doubleheader over the King’s Way Christian High Knights (0-5), 13-12 and 12-2.
The Bruins outhit the Knights 12-10 in the first game, fighting back from a deficit three times to pull out a come-from-behind victory. The Bruins fell behind 2-0 in the first inning and then they scored one run in the third and three in the fourth for a 4-2 advantage going into the fourth frame. The Knights regained the lead with a seven-run fourth inning rally before the Bruins answered with five runs in the bottom half.
The Knights again took the lead with a three-run fifth to go on top 12-9. The Bruins then responded by scoring four runs to take a 13-12 advantage. Two scoreless innings followed as the Bruins were able to hold on for the victory.
The Bruins were led offensively by Josie Dickey (RBI), Kiera Bucher (1-for-3, two RBIs), Joella Posini (3-for-3, RBI, triple), Danica Herman (1-for-2, RBI), Lola Marti (1-for-2, two RBIs) and Fiona Grabb (2-for-3). Starting pitcher Herman and reliever Marti combined in the pitching circle for eight strikeouts and eight walks.
In Game 2, the Bruins won by 10 runs in a five-inning, Mercy Rule victory. The Bruins led from start-to-finish, outhitting the Knights 14-7. The Bruins had one error vs. the five for the Knights.
Halle Kock (2-for-4, RBI), Posini (2-for-4, two RBIs, home run), Madison Russum (RBI), McKena Carlock (1-for-2, RBI) and Julia Mullinix (3-for-3) helped lead the Bruins’ offense. Starting pitcher Dickey had a solid performance in the circle with eight strikeouts and one walk.
The Bruins were seeking to notch their seventh straight win April 15, in a 4 p.m. first place league showdown at home against the Seton Catholic High Cougars (6-0 league, 6-1 overall). The Bruins then play April 17 at 4 p.m. versus the Cougars in Vancouver.
