The young Columbia High Bruins girls basketball team (three freshmen, six sophomores) continues to have growing pains, competing against more experienced squads.
Playing for the first time since Dec. 22 (a 53-19 loss to the Rochester Warriors), the Bruins (0-2 league, 2-8 overall) lost their Trico League opener Jan. 2, 69-19, to Seton Catholic. Seton was the WIAA Class 1A No. 13-ranked team at the time. The visiting Cougars are 3-0 in league and 9-4 overall.
The Bruins trailed 30-5 at halftime. Freshman Joella Posini had team highs of eight points and nine rebounds.
The Bruins, guided by second-year Coach Justin Frazier, lost Jan. 4 at Castle Rock, 45-25.
“One of the positive things that we had from the Castle Rock game was that we played much better in the second half and the girls continued fighting hard, but we just had too many turnovers,” Frazier said. “When we can just start reducing the number of turnovers, that’s what’s going to really help us turn things around this season. Hopefully, we’ll continue to learn and just get better week-by-week.”
Columbia fell behind 11-4 after the first quarter and trailed 28-11 at halftime. The Bruins outscored the Rockets, 8-4, in the third period.
“We’re just focusing on trying to get better game-by-game,” Frazier said. “We’re just trying to help everyone get more experience. For all of the girls, except for Sara [Miller], this is their first year playing varsity basketball. So, they’re all really starting to see what the speed of the game is actually like.”
Halle Kock, a sophomore, scored a season-high eight points; Posini had a team-high four assists; Miller, a sophomore, had a team-high 12 rebounds.
“Halle played really good against Castle Rock; she played strong defense and it was her best game of the year offensively, too,” Frazier said.
The Bruins were scheduled to play their next home game Jan. 11 vs. La Center (0-3 league, 4-8 overall) at Columbia High School in White Salmon.
