WHITE SALMON — The Columbia High School (CHS) Bruins boys soccer program returns from its most impressive season in recent years going 10-1 in conference play and 16-3 overall in 2024. The Bruins also won the Trico district tournament and advanced to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Class 1A quarterfinals.
Despite graduating a number of all-conference seniors, the Bruins return with a core group of players ready to build on recent success. Seniors Cole Wooding, Alex Baldwin, Ulices Huerta and Damian Sanchez return for their final year to lead the Bruins. Supported by a strong cast of juniors that include Matthew Carrillo, Isaac Reynoso, Juan Santoyo, Manuel Barajas, Humberto Pulido and Mathew Miller, the Bruins look poised to defend their district title.
Second-year head Coach Gio Magana, along with assistants Brady Trullinger, Alex Gutierrez and Pavlo Stavrou, return to guide the team. New players including junior goalkeeper Ricardo Cortez, junior Anderson Hernandez-Pena, sophomore Pablo Santos Secaida and freshman Benson Zendt will bring depth to the squad.
In the Bruins’ first outing, they took on No. 9-ranked Highland Scotties from Cowiche, Washington. Strong defense by Baldwin, Sanchez and Santoyo kept the Scotties scoreless. Pulido opened the scoring for the Bruins with a dominant header off a corner kick and Reynoso added two more goals for a 3-0 CHS win.
The Bruins handed local rival Stevenson a 7-0 loss in Bruins Stadium March 17 and followed up with a 10-1 home win against a young Trico newcomer Onalaska team on March 21.
The Bruins were scheduled to play at Fort Vancouver (1-1) on March 24 and at undefeated Seton Catholic (1-0-2) on March 26.
