The Columbia High Bruins had a great start to their 16-game Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Class 1A girls soccer schedule as they won their nonleague season opening match 3-1 over the Trout Lake/Glenwood High Mustangs on Sept. 10 in Trout Lake.
The Bruins, guided by first-year Coach Parker Walker, came back to score three goals after the Mustangs took a 1-0 advantage early in the match.
“Trout Lake played with a high defensive line and a quick offsides trap. It was good competition to start our season,” Walker said. Columbia overcame the 1-0 deficit as senior Sequoia Cohen and sophomore Willow Cohen each scored goals to help the Bruins take a 2-1 halftime lead. Senior Saylor Hauge scored a second half goal to put the Bruins up 3-1.
Three goalkeepers helped lead the Bruins defense, including sophomore Kiki Barkhimer, who was the goalie in the first half. Sophomore Lani Uffelman and junior Belen Birrueta relieved Barkhimer in the second half. The Mustangs, of the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) Class 3A/2A/1A Special District 1 in Oregon, won their first game Sept. 12, 2-0 in a non-league match-up against the Class 1A Stevenson High Bulldogs (1-1) at Stevenson High School. The Mustangs followed with a 3-0 non-league loss to the Blanchet Catholic Cavaliers (4-0) Sept. 14 in Salem.
