The Dalles High Riverhawks extended their unbeaten streak to six with a, 3-1, win over the Molalla High Indians in an OSAA Class 4A Tri-Valley Conference boys soccer game Oct. 3 at Molalla High School.
The Riverhawks (3-0-2 TVC, 5-1-2 overall) took a 1-0 first half lead over the Indians (1-3-1 TVC, 3-5-2 overall). The Dalles junior forward and leading scorer, Hulises Najera (11 goals), scored two of his team’s three goals.
The Riverhawks, guided by third-year Coach Jesus Granados, led the six-team TVC standings with four games left in the regular season. If they remain in first place, they’ll win their first league title in 25 years.
“It’s awesome that we’re in position now to possibly win the league title,” said Granados. “It would be an awesome accomplishment for me as a coach, as well as for the players and our school, too.
“The boys played well against Molalla, and they had a day off last week so that they could kind of get their minds off of soccer for one day and then come back feeling a little refreshed. I believe we’ll continue having success because the boys have been playing pretty well; they’re playing consistently.”
Najera scored off a header from a free kick taken by junior midfielder Marcos Quiroz for the 1-0, first-half advantage.
“We’ve had a little tendency to have kind of a slow starting first half in some of our games, but after about 10 minutes, then we always seemed to get into a good offensive rhythm,” said Granados. “We’re in first place so we’ll just take things one game at a time and each game that we win from now on basically provides us with a confidence boost.”
Najera and senior midfielder Oswaldo Heredia-Vargas both scored goals to help put The Dalles up 3-1 for the final margin. Vargas and sophomore midfielder Juan Camarillo each had assists. Senior goalkeeper Luciano Alvarado had two saves.
The Riverhawks played at Crook County on Oct. 9 and host Estacada on Oct. 12.
“If we win our last four games, then we’ll win the league title,” Granados said.“At the beginning of the season, our first goal was to win the Tri-Valley Conference. Our second goal is to make it to the semifinals of the state playoffs, and I think we’ll have a good chance to do that.”
The Riverhawks lost a play-in round game to Seaside and didn’t qualify for the 16-team state playoffs in 2022 — after making them in 2021.
The Riverhawks have not lost to Class 4A teams. The Riverhawks’ lone loss was 3-2 to Class 5A Hood River Valley.
