The window of opportunity for the Hood River Valley football team to win its season opener Friday in Redmond closed rather quickly – as in the amount of time it took Panther senior receiver Nathan Wachs to haul in two long touchdown passes. The talented Wachs finished with four TDs and led the host Panthers to a 44-8 Class 5A football win over the Eagles.

The Dalles’ 10U Little League team lost both its games at the district tourney, falling 19-4 to Redmond in its opener, before dropping a heartbreaker, 9-8, in consolation play against Sisters.

The Dalles High Riverhawks girls golf team competed in the Class 5A Intermountain Conference tournament April 18 at Eagle Crest Resort Ridge Golf Course in Redmond and sophomore Nellie Wilkinson had an outstanding performance, shooting 97 to take third place overall individually.

Intermountain Conference foes Hood River Valley and Redmond continued to serve notice that this year’s district swimming meet will prominently feature athletes from both schools. That, and the fact that based on head-to-head meetings this season, there is no clear favorite to win the title.

The Eagles and Panthers matched strokes for the second time in as many weeks Jan. 26 at a four-way meet in Madras. Redmond came out on top in both the boys (119-93) and girls (114-112) competitions. Two weeks ago in Hood River, the margin of victory was less for the Redmond boys over HRV (85-78), and the HRV girls won by a comfortable margin, 96-63.
