Hood River Valley’s cross country runners competed on tired legs this past week, as most ran in two races , the final two preps before the upcoming Northwest Oregon Conference championship meet on Oct. 25.
Hood River Valley jump started its 2022 cross country season at Friday’s Night Meet at Wilsonville High School and a couple of senior runners led the Eagle charge.
“Go west,” they said back in the day when adventurous types plied the Oregon Trail. (No doubt some of the weary travelers could have used some thick-soled running shoes.) And west is the direction Hood River Valley’s cross country program will shake a leg for the next four years in the revamped Northwest Oregon Conference, based in the Portland-metro area (see list of schools).
Senior Lauren Griggs and sophomore Jackson Bullock were Hood River Valley’s top placers at last weekend’s Class 5A state track and field meet at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Things are coming together for Hood River Valley’s girls track and field team, as it continues its march toward next month’s Intermountain Conference district meet. The Eagles are fine-tuning by mixing and matching some of the pieces to compete the puzzle.
The balance of power in high school track and field tends to shift week-to-week during the spring season, as teams juggle training regimens toward season-ending district and state meets. This past week the Intermountain Conference power base tilted toward the Gorge, as Hood River and The Dalles registered some league-leading times and distances.
