Hood River Valley will host a cross country meet for the first time in a year and a half on Wednesday.
Canby, Parkrose, and Putnam will gather at the high school and tackle the 5,000-meter course, which meanders around the HRV athletic complex fields and nearby Indian Creek Trail. The girls race begins at 4 p.m. and the boys at 4:40 p.m.
Hood River Valley jump started its 2022 cross country season at Friday’s Night Meet at Wilsonville High School and a couple of senior runners led the Eagle charge.
Hood River Valley junior Elliot Hawley and sophomore Simone Tillman raced to runner-up finishes Friday at the Dean Nice Invitational track and field meet — Hawley in his specialty, Tillman in her newfound specialty. And, just for good measure, Tillman tossed in a first place in her old specialty.
The balance of power in high school track and field tends to shift week-to-week during the spring season, as teams juggle training regimens toward season-ending district and state meets. This past week the Intermountain Conference power base tilted toward the Gorge, as Hood River and The Dalles registered some league-leading times and distances.
Hood River Valley’s return to high school cross country competition Saturday was punctuated by junior Elliot Hawley’s near win in the Division 2 race at the sunny Nike Portland XC.
