THE GORGE — The buttercups found on The Dalles Mountain are unique, endangered, and are being monitored and protected by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The fast-moving water of the Missoula Floods during the Ice Age shaped the beautiful landscape of the Gorge by scraping away rocks and sediment through the valley, and it also shaped the unique growth of The Dalles Mountain Buttercup.

To the editor: I am appalled and truly saddened that Oregon is appealing to the state Supreme Court the rulings by lower courts that the proposed Walmart may not build on its chosen site here in The Dalles due to its wetlands.

January is often a time to struggle with recently made resolutions. However, for me, every three years or so, January has meant packing my bags and field equipment and hopping a plane to the far end of South America.
