“We’re ready for things to be drier than normal,” said Lucas King, fire and fuels program at Mt. Adams Resource Stewards (MARS). The organization works to put good fire, more commonly known as prescribed burns, on the forest floor of fire-adapted landscapes in the Gorge.

In 2019, House Bill 5050 added funds to OSU Extension’s budget for fire resistance and resilience. The program’s $1 million annual budget supports six regional fire specialists with expertise in topics like fire ecology, rangeland management, home hardening and prescribed fire.

In 2020, I watched swallows curling in low flight, as they do before a rainstorm. The air was stagnant, dry, smoke-brown; the sun a pale yellow disk. Wildfires were burning almost 21,000 acres in the United States, mostly in Oregon, Washington and California.
