‘Repulsive’

I don’t get it. What’s happened to people being respectful and civil in public? I don’t go out very often anymore, but when I do, I hear people in restaurants and other places with their friends and buddies visiting, using the “F” word in practically every sentence. Even when young kiddos are nearby.

I’m a retired teacher. I would have kicked students out of my classroom for doing this. Maybe it’s time for restaurants to do the same for repulsive grownups.

Cora Moser has my vote for assessor!

Cora’s signs are popping up everywhere on private property. This shows the strong voter support for her. She cares about our rising property taxes and the people in our community.

I am convinced she will do great as our new assessor. She was raised in Mill A and understands the values and priorities that matter most to local families. She takes the time to listen, asks thoughtful questions, and is committed to serving the public with integrity.

‘Eyes on prize’

I feel we need different eyes on the prize. The prize is being able to afford our homes without overtaxing properties based on unrealized capital gains. Just because a property owner in your vicinity sells their home for an exuberant price, it shouldn’t mean the rest of us have to follow in their path. Right now, I am just trying to live in my house and enjoy my retirement years. Do not get me wrong, I have known the current assessor for a long time and like him and his family. I just feel we need new eyes looking at our concerns and fighting for our citizens.

I have lived in Skamania County for 85 years, and during that time I have seen a lot of changes, some good and some bad. I believe it’s time for a change in the assessor’s office.

Scooter and I have Cora’s campaign sign on our property. We also belong to the Skamania County Saddle Club together. Many of you came to our Cowboy Breakfast this year and had a great morning with us.  Like so many others, we can honestly say that she is a pleasure to work with. Cora Moser works tirelessly with whatever topic she is attending to.

We think Cora will be well-received in the county, and property owners will benefit from her being the assessor. She is a sharp person who does her homework to prepare for whatever tasks are in front of her.

Democrat’s socialism

So, socialism is on the march. We’re told this is “democratic” socialism though, the “good” kind like they have in Sweden!

A little history lesson: Up until the1970s, Sweden was a capitalist powerhouse with the fourth highest per capita wealth on the planet. long lifespans, low infant mortality, a very robust educated middle class and minimal poverty. Then, in the ‘70s, they started doing everything Democrats want to do here. Universal healthcare, generous retirement benefits, free childcare, paid maternity and family leave, free college, price controls and a lot more. This is the Sweden that Democrats are talking about.

It looked pretty good for a while, then reality stepped in. Government consumed 60% of GDP, unemployment quintupled, debt skyrocketed, currency lost value at 10% inflation and interest rates were at 500% at one point! By the early ‘90s,they went from being 50% richer than most developed countries to 50% poorer and no net private sector jobs were created. The “Golden Goose” of capitalism was dying.

What they discovered is you can have a robust, expanding economy, or generous socialism, but not at the same time.

To stave off total collapse, they were forced to completely overhaul their economic system. Deregulation, no minimum wage, no inheritance or wealth tax, corporate taxes cut by 50%, a mandated balanced budget, and a universal school voucher system. State-owned companies were privatized, as was healthcare, social security, and even welfare, which was structured to make sure people are not better off on welfare than working.

It worked, but their taxes are extremely high on EVERYBODY. The rich certainly pay their “fair share”, but not enough to drive them away. Instead, the bottom half (because there’s a lot more of them) pays more than 50% of all taxes (compared to 3.3% here). It has been described as “recycling” wealth rather than redistributing it.

So, we CAN learn from the Swedes, but the most important lesson is a flourishing economy can be wrecked by adopting policies that sound good, but ignore economic reality, destroying the “Golden Goose” that pays for it all. Let’s not do that here.

Respect for all

As a disabled veteran, I have to be open as a speaker of ALL disabled veterans: White, Black, male or female, and, most of all, our children — that’s OUR future! I grew up in Klickitat County and have retired back here after 36-plus years in law enforcement. I worked for the Winston Police Department in Oregon, and Thurston County Sheriff’s Office and Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office in Washington. I’m very concerned for our wonderful county and hope to keep the freedoms we have here.

I have thoroughly checked the three candidates and their credentials.

I believe and support Tony Warren for sheriff of Klickitat County. Tony has all the qualifications to lead the sheriff’s department. Tony is the only candidate running for sheriff who is currently in law enforcement and working for the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office as a detective sergeant. The other two candidates have been out of law enforcement for approximately three years, and the other approximately four years.

Tony has integrity, is a hard worker, has the leadership qualifications to run a 24/7 department and will be a “working sheriff.”

Support working folks

I’m voting for Ben Christly and Diana Perez for Washington State Legislative District 17. That’s because Ben and Diana support regular working folks, unlike their opponents, incumbents Kevin Waters and David Steube. Mr. Waters and Mr. Steube would rather protect our wealthiest citizens from paying their fair share of taxes than support critically needed pre-kindergarten and K-12 education. That’s what Republican leaders do: protect the wealthy over the well-being of regular citizens, including the Republican folks who voted for them.

Mr. Waters and Mr. Steube both voted against the “Millionaires’ Tax” earlier this year. This tax would let workers keep up to $1 million in earnings tax-free. Only income beyond $1 million would be taxed at a rate of 9.9%. In addition to supporting education, this tax will provide small business tax breaks and expand the Working Families Tax Credit, a program that provides tax refunds for the families who need them the most.

I’m tired of hearing Republican leaders in both Washington D.C., and Olympia pay lip service to how much they care for regular people, only to vote for the interests of the wealthy and neglect the needs of conservative and liberal citizens alike. It’s past time to send these faux champions of the working class back home. That’s why I’m voting for Ben Christly and Diana Perez.
