Know your dog

Animal rescue groups and those adopting dogs from them may not know where the dogs came from, their health history, or whether they have been socialized with humans and other dogs. If you are considering adopting a dog, you have the right and obligation to know the history of the dog. There is a huge difference between a dog that has been vaccinated and properly fed and socialized and a dog that has not.

Recent published studies by the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), NAIA (National Animal Interest Alliance) and the AKC (American Kennel Club) show a marked decrease in dog overpopulation which has, ironically perhaps, increased the demand for shelter dogs.

Eighty-three percent of household dogs are now neutered, resulting in a dwindling supply of puppies from local sources and unprecedented level of dog importation and relocation. Connecticut veterinarian and NAIA Board member Dr. Arnold Goldman counsels that even though relocating pets may feel good in the short run, it does nothing to solve that problem of surplus dogs at the source: “Today’s shelters include everything from traditional facilities helping local animals to new, retail-style models that meet customer demand by importing dogs from other states and foreign countries.”

If you get a puppy, insist on seeing the parents of the dog and the premises where those puppies were whelped. Do not take a puppy from its mother before eight weeks and be sure the puppy and the mother have had their shots. This applies to both kennel bred and home bred puppies.

If you adopt a dog from a shelter, insist on knowing where the dog came from and its health and personal history.

‘Families’ fun

I was so happy that Quarterflash came back to play in Hood River and this time they played in Families in the Park. They are the best group in the world am I’m glad I went to see them again. Their music is great.
