To the editor:
Child separation on the U.S./Mexico border caused by the Trump administration is now in Congressman Greg Walden’s court, and I don’t see any resolution happening. The ongoing emotional trauma and long-term scarring of these children is completely unnecessary and preventable. It makes my head and heart ache. How about you?
The powerful congressional committee that Mr. Walden chairs, Energy and Commerce, has oversight of the family separation crisis, but it has produced no real results.
Walden refuses to use his power to hold the administration accountable for separating families at the border, or to hold the Department of Health and Human Services accountable for its role in the ongoing fiasco.
It is well within his power and the scope of his committee to arrange the most basic form of oversight, a congressional hearing. He has failed to do that, and has failed to either author or co-sponsor legislation to end child separation.
As a constituent, I would like to see that my representative is working in a dedicated and constructive way to correct problems like child separation. I don’t see him doing that, or filling the basic responsibilities of his role as chair of Energy and Commerce.
In November I’m voting for Jamie McLeod-Skinner, a candidate who is committed to acting ethically and in her constituents’ best interests, rather than as a Trump puppet.
