Letter to the editor: Support Jobs

I worked for the railroad tie treatment plant, now operated by AmeriTies West, for four years. I am writing this because my experience is nothing like what some are describing.

First of all, some of the chemicals we handled and the work we did could be considered dangerous if not handled correctly.

That’s why we paid attention every single day to health, safety and environmental protection. Employees had yearly health assessments and front-line workers were empowered to speak out if they had suggestions or concerns.

Today, AmeriTies accounts for 54 local jobs. Employees work hard and receive good pay with benefits. The company is investing in new equipment and upgrades. It purchases materials and services from local suppliers.

I’ve lived in The Dalles area for 30 years. We need responsible employers like AmeriTies. We need these family wage jobs. Let’s find ways to support local employers not drive them out of town.
