This past weekend my family had the great pleasure of going to Dufur for a basketball game for my sons’ basketball team. I say great pleasure because I as well as another gentlemen from my community had a rather inspiring experience.
I was wandering back and forth between the girl’s game in the upper gym and the boys’ game in the lower gym. On one of my trips back from the girls gym there was a group of boys playing in front of me one with a sling on his arm.
All of the boys were a ways in front of me and were playing and joking with one another.
The young man with the sling on his arm noticed me getting ready to come through the door and stopped what he was doing to rush back and hold the door open for me.
I thanked him and walked off thinking how kind it was that he had stopped what he was doing in order to open the door for me. I returned to my seat in the boy’s gym, not 20 minutes later another member of our community came and sat next to me and told me that “the most exceptional thing had just happened” to him.
It seems that the same boy that had held the door for me had also held the door for him. Another young man (who noticed that this older gentlemen was wearing a Marine’s hat) and asked him if he served as a Marine to which the older gentlemen’s response was “why yes” and the young man shook his hand and thanked him for his service.
City of Dufur YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT! What wonderful children you are raising! Thank you for taking the time to teach them manners.
I only hope that when you come to our community our children can be just as kind and respectful as those boys were.
